Best Ever Chocolate Mug Cake

  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 yolk
  • 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 3 tbsp buttermilk, or regular whole milk
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/8 tsp kosher salt
  • 2 tbsp Dutch process cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsp mini chocolate chips


  • Combine the oil and sugar in a 12-ounce microwave safe mug and using a fork, mix to combine. 
  • Add the yolk and vanilla and mix again. 
  • Add the buttermilk and mix a final time. 
  • Add the flour, baking powder, salt and cocoa powder to the mug and using your fork, mix to combine. Add the chocolate chips and mix again.
  • Place your mug in the microwave and microwave on high for about 1 1/2 minutes. The cake is done when the top of the cake is lightly sticky but not wet. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.
